Background of the Study
Traditional storytelling techniques have long been integral to Hausa oral traditions, serving as a vehicle for cultural transmission and social education. These techniques, which include the use of repetition, rhythmic intonation, and dramatic pauses, are essential in establishing discourse coherence in narratives (Sule, 2023). In Hausa storytelling, coherence is achieved through structured narrative frameworks that guide listeners through a logical sequence of events and moral lessons. The performance of these narratives is deeply embedded in communal practices and often involves interactive elements that engage audiences (Garba, 2024). However, modernization and media influences have introduced new narrative forms that sometimes diverge from traditional techniques. This study investigates the effect of traditional storytelling methods on the coherence of Hausa narratives, examining how age-old techniques contribute to clarity and emotional impact. By comparing classical narratives with contemporary renditions, the research aims to highlight the enduring value of traditional methods in maintaining narrative integrity and cultural continuity (Sule, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Although traditional storytelling techniques are revered for fostering discourse coherence in Hausa narratives, there is limited empirical research examining their effectiveness in contemporary settings. Modern adaptations may dilute these techniques, potentially compromising narrative clarity and cultural resonance (Garba, 2024). This gap in literature prevents a full appreciation of the role that traditional methods play in ensuring coherent communication. The study aims to address this deficiency by evaluating how traditional storytelling techniques affect discourse coherence and comparing them with modern narrative practices. This inquiry is essential for understanding the balance between tradition and innovation in maintaining effective communication in Hausa narratives.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document traditional storytelling techniques in Hausa narratives.

  2. To analyze their contribution to discourse coherence.

  3. To compare traditional and modern narrative practices.

Research Questions

  1. What traditional techniques are used in Hausa storytelling?

  2. How do these techniques enhance narrative coherence?

  3. How do modern narrative adaptations compare with traditional methods?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive evaluation of traditional storytelling techniques and their role in maintaining discourse coherence in Hausa narratives. The findings will inform cultural preservation efforts, storytelling practices, and academic research in oral traditions (Sule, 2023; Garba, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing traditional and modern narrative practices in Hausa storytelling and does not extend to other narrative forms or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Traditional Storytelling Techniques: Established methods used in oral narratives.

  • Discourse Coherence: Logical and consistent flow of narrative.

  • Hausa Narratives: Oral stories and folktales from the Hausa community.
